Meatless Monday (Stomach Flu Style)

On Saturday night hubby made a feast of baby back ribs, baked beans, and coleslaw and I gobbled it on up, followed by I don’t know how many home made chocolate chips cookies from my BFF Andrea.  Sunday morning, I woke up and my tummy was definitely off. Figured I just over indulged and it would go away but by the afternoon, I had fever and chills, major abdominal cramping, a lot of fatigue, and felt like this:

I won’t gross you out with the details but I spent the rest of the day going back and forth from the bathroom and the bedroom, managing the puking and the resting with a lot of whining and little bit of crying. (I ABHOR being sick and sometimes when I am, I cry, I’m not too proud to admit it.  I just hate not having control over my own body.)  Is it stomach flu or food poisoning from the pork?  I dunno what it is but it sure feels like crap.

Today I woke up and still felt like garbage- I just want to curl up in a little ball and die. Seriously. Right now.  I’M READY TO FEEL BETTER AGAIN.  ARGH!!!!!

Nevertheless, having eaten just two sips of soup yesterday (which came right back up) I figure I better try to get something in me today that’s a tad more substantial and just may help balance out whatever it is that is growing and attacking my stomach.  Bleck.

For breakfast, I had one Morning Star Veggie Sausage.  Just one.  That’s it.

Normally, I cook up one of these and make a breakfast sandwich with a fried egg and wheat english muffin but not today.  As soon as I ate the veggie sausage, my stomach revolted so I warmed up The Best Tea In The World, Trader Joe’s green tea with candy cane flavor, to soothe my aching, cramping tummy.  (This is a seasonal tea, off the shelves by January, so I have already stock piled about 20 boxes worth!)

For “lunch”, or really whenever I feel like I can handle it, I am planning to go with another Trader Joe’s fave of mine, butternut squash soup and lots and lots of Gatorade as an attempt to replenish all that sodium and potassium I have depleted since yesterday.

And for dinner, you guessed it, more soup.  I’ve been enjoying the new Campbell’s Select Harvest line of soups but for today, as no meat will be entering my body until Wednesday, I am going with the can o’ minestrone and whole grain pasta along with some Milton’s multi-grain baked crackers on the side.

I really hope most of that stays down and makes me feel human again.  I mentioned that I won’t be eating meat until Wednesday because that night we have reservations at The French Laundry– one of the best restaurants in the whole entire world.  I can’t wait!  Well, actually, I can wait… until my stomach is back to normal, that is.

In the meantime, wish me luck, and pray for me…

  1. Not feeling so hot myself. I recommend Three Stone Hearth’s chicken-veggie soup with chard & broccoli. It’s cooked in a bone broth with onions, celery, parsley, olive oil, thyme, sage, sea salt, fresh rosemary, pepper and bay. Best part is it’s organic and comes in ready to eat from their berkeley kitchen to your table. Hands down the best comfort food there is.

    As one who is allergic to basically all food, let me recommend ginger! Ginger candies help soothe your tummy, and a couples slices of fresh ginger with hot water does wonders!

  3. Ohhhhh, yuck!
    I second the ginger recommendation! Ginger candies are great and I don’t always remember to keep them stocked.
    For food poisoning or serious stomach flu-y symptoms, I go as bland as possible: saltines, and gallons and gallons of (weak, cheap) ginger ale and gatorade. After yesterday’s nauseating 20-miler-with-post-nasal-drip it was goldfish crackers and gatorade, but same idea. Once I can keep down saltines and gatorade, then I start adding in chicken soup and yogurt. I find it’s really hard to keep proteins down, and yogurt is the gentlest I’ve found. The most helpful thing I’ve found is just to drink tons of liquids with sugar and electrolytes in, to try to replace the calories and the fluids you’re losing, and to flush everything through.
    So sorry :(. Hope you’re feeling better by the time you get this!

  4. Holy crap, sounds like it wasn’t such a bad thing that I sicked-out on Sunday’s hoga. One downward dog and who knows what might have happened! Hope u feel better soon XOXO
